Eye Candy

Whoopie! I finally have my long-awaited, highly-anticipated, couldn't-wait-to-get-it copy of Somerset Studio's "Art Journaling" in my hot little paint-stained hands!!!!! Oh, Happy Day for a journal junkie!!!!! At first glance, this issue is everything advertised and more. All I need is a cup of tea and my dog for company. NIRVANA!

This post could have been titled, "Sinatra's Love Child", since this is the artistic result of my icy afternoon studio session. However, I opted to name it for the title of the journal page, "Bloom".

So many women of my generation never had the opportunity to achieve their dreams. We are the generation of teachers, nurses and secretaries. We were raised to put "family first" and ourselves last. We marched for peace, made posters for
Earth Day, and burned our bras so that our daughters and grand-daughters wouldn't have to suffer our fates. We were good daughters, great wives and awesome mothers. We took care of everyone and lost our identities and ourselves in the process.

For many of us, now that our families have been raised and our obligations fulfilled, we finally have an opportunity to pick up the threads of dreams seemingly forgotten long ago. What will be woven with those long-cherished ideas and dreams remains to be seen. We can't figure out where we're going until we know who we are. This page is dedicated to my sisters and the wonderful journey of discovery.

Seduced by Sinatra

We're in the throes of a terrible ice storm here in the northeastern part of the United States.

The snow began last night after midnight, and it's continued throughout the day. There's no relief in sight for the next few hours, so I've got a "date" with Frank Sinatra this afternoon. I just purchased Sinatra's new album, "Sinatra - Seduction - Sinatra Sings of Love" and can't wait to listen!

I'm craving
color on this wintry day, and there's no other way to satisfy it than to play with markers, paints and collage in my studio while Frank lulls my psyche and seduces my Muse with his silky voice. Pure BLISS!

Got to thinking . . . one's personal artistic style is very much like wearing a comfortable pair of old Birkenstocks. SO comfortable, in fact, that it's difficult to change and try something new. I've got a closet full of beautiful shoes -- so many in fact, that my husband says I'll never have a chance to wear them all. Giving the devil his due, he's probably right. Time after time, day after day, I return to my faithful old friends, my Birks. Matter of fact, the last time we went to a wedding, I broke down and purchased a brand new patent leather pair to slip into during the reception. My "old friends" are just too comfy for words, and I can't live without them.

I think my artistic style is like my non-fashion forward footwear - safe, sturdy and comfortable. It needs a bit of a shake-up this year. Not that there's anything wrong with comfort, but I need to try some new things - branch out, try on some new wings (pardon the pun), and shake it up a bit.

Hmmm . . . sounds like a good idea. And, maybe tomorrow, I'll wear a pair of Sketchers too!

Where is the Yellow Brick Road . . .

Well . . . I'm definitely off on an adventure; but, where is the yellow brick road when you need it?!? And, more importantly, even if I find it, where does it lead? For the past seven years I've painted murals in children's rooms. Now it's rapidly becoming time to move on to another artful career. (A baby boomer's body doesn't last forever no many how many Advil's we take!)

Frankly, there should be some sort of road map or at least a huge purple-with-green-polka-dots sign that appears right about now to show the way or at least point in a suitable (or at least acceptable) direction. But, alas . . . like everything else in life, I guess I'll just have to put on my "big girl panties" and figure it out myself.

So . . . with my "big girl panties" in a twit and a paintbrush in my hand, off I go, a seeker, to find my answers in Oz. I'll need a few companions to help me along the way. Will you be my Scarecrow?

My First Entry!

Yay for me! My very first post on my new blog -- the dawn of a new era!
